  2008 Elections

BizPac

BizPac, the political action committee of the Committee of 100, contributes funds to candidates for Huntsville Mayor, City Council and Board of Education; Madison Mayor and City Council; the Madison County Commission and Madison County Superintendent.

BizPac board members interview every candidate for these offices in June and July of election years. We make recommendations for endorsements and contributions to the membership for its approval.

We give money to candidates who are qualified and progressive team players, and consider strongly those with a business background. We contribute most in those elections where we think we can make a significant difference.

We continue to work closely with these leaders after the elections to discuss business-related issues and offer assistance in developing solutions to community problems. BizPac sponsors regular lunch meetings for members with local elected leaders to encourage two-way communication.

BizPac also sponsors the Political Training Institute for current political candidates, campaign workers, and those thinking about running in the future.

Major Current Projects

  • Continue to lobby for local business issues.
  • Prepare for the 2008 elections* with polling, a Political Training Institute, and candidate recruitment.
  • Interview candidates for local elected offices and recommend endorsements and contributions to membership.
  • Develop stronger cooperative relationships with local elected leaders through meetings with members and ongoing dialogue.
  • Recommend and support progressive and qualified candidates for key economic development boards and commissions.
  • Encourage regional cooperation between local government leaders.

* 2008 elections will include Huntsville Mayor, Huntsville City Council and Board of Education in districts 1 and 5, Madison Mayor, Madison City Council in all seven districts, and Madison County Commission in all seven districts.

2008 BizPac Endorsements

BizPac has endorsed Bob Wagner, candidate for Madison County Commission District 2, for the Republican Primary on June 3, and contributed $5,000 to his campaign. There are no Democrats in this race.

"Bob has shown exceptional leadership and the ability to get consensus on progressive issues during his years on the Madision City Council, especially as Council President during the past three years," says Donna Lamb, BizPac chair. "He is a strong supporter of economic development incentives, including growing our industrial parks, TIFs for retail development, actively recruiting young professionals and improving public education. We believe he is the best candidate to work with other government leaders in preparing our entire county for the tremendous growth we expect during the next four years."

Endorsements in the other two Madison County Commission races that will be determined on June 3 in Districts 5 and 6 have not been made. We will interview candidates in Districts 1, 4 and 7 - currently represented by Roger Jones, Jerry Craig and Mike Gillespie -- in the fall and announce our endorsements at that time.
